STARTING A GROUP

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Group

STEP 1 – BECOME A MEMBER

Before starting a group, you must first become a Community Leader member (or a Business Member, if you’re also planning on listing your plastic-free business, environmental service or anti-single-use plastic organisation).

Full details on membership options can be found on our Membership Levels page.

STEP 2 – CREATE A MEMBER PROFILE

Firstly, create your personal profile.

Select ‘Change Profile Photo’. Your Profile Photo will be used on your profile and throughout the site. If there is a Gravatar associated with your account email we will use that, or you can upload an image from your computer.

Select ‘Change Cover Image’. Your Cover Image will be used to customise the header of your profile. For better results, make sure to upload an image that is larger than 1400px wide, and 440px tall.

STEP 3 – VISIT THE GROUPS PAGE

Navigate to the Groups page by selecting ‘Groups’ under the ‘Community’ tab in the Main Menu.

Before creating your own group, observe what groups already exist. You can also ‘Search Groups…’ via the Search Bar on the Groups page. If there is already a similar group, taking the same action that you planned, then it is best to join the existing group – remember, there is power in numbers! And you can always contact the founder of an existing group to offer your services as a joint Admin.

If there is no similar group in existence, then select ‘Create a Group’ from the Groups page menu.

STEP 4 – NAME YOUR GROUP

When choosing a name for your Group, think about what Community Members will be searching for in the Search Bar. Your group should ‘do what it says on the box’, so to speak.

If you’re representing a specific village, town or city, then include its name in your Group name. If you’re dedicated to a specific action or product, then include its name in your Group name, and so forth.

Be succinct and use as few words possible.

STEP 5 – ADD A GROUP DESCRIPTION

Explain the purpose of your Group in the Group Description. This will help Community Members understand exactly what you are set out to do.

Click ‘Create Group and Continue’.

STEP 6 – SELECT PRIVACY SETTINGS

On the  group ‘Settings’ page you can choose your privacy settings for the group – Public, Private or Hidden.

Any site member can join a public group. It will be listed in the groups directory and in search results. Group content and activity will be visible to any site member.

Private groups will also be listed in the groups directory and in search results, but only users who request membership and are accepted can join the group. Group content and activity will only be visible to members of the group.

Hidden groups will not be listed in the groups directory or search results. Only users who are invited can join the group and group content and activity will only be visible to members of the group.

You can also choose which members of this group are allowed to invite others.

Click ‘Next Step’.

STEP 7 – CREATE A GROUP FORUM

Create a discussion forum to allow members of this group to communicate in a structured, bulletin-board style fashion.

Click ‘Next Step’.

STEP 8 – ADD A GROUP PROFILE PHOTO

Upload an image to use as a profile photo for your group. The image will be shown on the main group page, and in search results.

Choose something that relates to the name of your group. You can skip adding a profile photo at this stage, if you need more time to choose something, but people are more like to join a group that looks active.

Click ‘Next Step’.

STEP 9 – ADD A GROUP COVER IMAGE

The Cover Image will be used to customise the header of your group. For better results, make sure to upload an image that is larger than 1400px wide, and 440px tall.

Again, you can skip adding a Cover Image at this stage, but it is best to complete your Group profile as soon as possible to encourage people to join.

You can update/change both the Profile Photo and Cover Image at any time.

Click ‘Next Step’.

STEP 10 – INVITE PEOPLE TO JOIN

Once you have built up friend connections you will be able to invite others to your group.

Of course, you can invite people offline to join your group. Just spread the word!

Together, we can all make a positive impact on the world.

Click ‘Finish’.
